Groundhog Day Update: What’s Next for Winter in Alabama
Groundhog Day is an annual tradition that looks to the famous Punxsutawney Phil for clues about how much of the winter season remains. The famous furry forecaster makes his debut about six weeks ahead of spring.
The yearly event is held at Gobblers Knob, near Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, and drew a massive crowd of adoring fans who braved conditions of “-1 degrees and 'feels like' 2 degrees” at 7:25 a.m. (ET), said AccuWeather.
Punxsutawney Phil Classic Predictions
- If Phil sees his shadow, this means six more weeks of winter.
- If Phil does not see his shadow, we are looking at an early spring season.
2026 Punxsutawney Phil Prediction
The world-famous groundhog saw his shadow this morning. So, according to Groundhog Day tradition, winter may be sticking around for another six weeks.
The Weather Channel said this “was the fifth time in the last six years that Phil has seen his shadow, and the 20th time since 2000.”
If you’re an Alabamian who enjoys crisp air and winter temperatures, Punxsutawney Phil had good news for you. For those of us already dreaming of spring blooms, patience is required, assuming Phil’s shadow knows what it’s doing.
