A cold front will move into Alabama, starting in the northwest on Friday afternoon and moving across the state. This will bring our area the chance for severe weather with showers and the threat of strong to marginally severe storms.

Expected Threats

James Spann, Alabama Weather Network and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist, said, “With modest instability and increased wind fields ahead of the front, a few storms could produce small hail and gusty winds Friday afternoon and Friday night. We do not expect a tornado threat.”

“Rain chances will increase from 20-40% Friday afternoon in the west to 40-80% Friday night, with the highest in the northern half,” said the National Weather Service in Birmingham.

The main threats for the Friday afternoon-to-evening activity are damaging winds and lightning.

Risk Level and Areas

The Storm Prediction Center has West Alabama under “marginal risk” for severe thunderstorms. The Townsquare Media Weather Center is monitoring this closely as there is a “slight risk” in northern Alabama.
