Greg Sankey Pushes Back on SEC Independence Ideas
SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey has acknowledged the growing frustrations within the conference. In an appearance on ESPN's The Paul Finebaum Show, Sankey talked about teams in the Southeastern Conference wanting an SEC-only governance, which could lead to SEC-only competition. Sankey responded with "I've acknowledged there are those who have said we should go our own way. I don't think that's the right decision. We have relationships and responsibilities within Division I."

Sankey was asked about the SEC breaking away on Finebaum's show and acknowledged that there are teams frustrated enough to do so, but he is working to prevent teams within the SEC from advocating for the conference to break away to govern and compete against themselves. Sankey was also quoted as saying, "How do we work with colleagues? Can we do that collectively? If we cannot do so, that question starts to generate more interest. I don't think anyone on any campus wants the status quo to remain. In our league, by unanimous vote, we can't go on as we are."
The conversation follows a meeting in Washington, D.C., about the future of collegiate sports as a whole, where we saw former Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban speak last Friday. Saban raised the question, "What are the guiding principles for the future of college athletics?" Saban went on to talk about how college can continue to grow while keeping the focus of the athletes at the forefront of college athletics.
There have been many discussions recently about playoff expansion and conference realignment within college athletics; however, it has stalled due to disagreements among multiple parties.
