How the Mayor’s Cup 5K Helps Tuscaloosa School Kids + Registration Info
Tuscaloosa has many traditions, one of them is annual spring running of the Mayor's Cup 5K through the downtown streets. This race is much more than a fun morning, it has a long lasting benefit for our local kids.
Mayor Maddox spearheaded the Tuscaloosa Pre-K Initiative shortly after taking office in 2005. He had a vision of providing pre-k funding to provide the opportunity for every four-year old child the opportunity of effective early intervention to pave the way for academic success. Currently, there are 21 Pre-K classroom units across nine Tuscaloosa City elementary schools.
Statics released on the Tuscaloosa Mayor's Cup website:
Successful Students:
- Pre-k increases high school graduation rates.
- Pre-k helps children do better on standardized tests.
- Pre-k reduces grade repetition.
- Pre-k reduces the number of children placed in special education.
Responsible Adults:
- Pre-k reduces crime and delinquency.
- Pre-k lowers rates of teen pregnancy.
- Pre-k leads to greater employment and higher wages as adults
- Pre-k contributes to more stable families.
- Every $1 invested in high-quality pre-k saves taxpayers up to $7.
The Mayor's Cup 5K is a healthy way to have fun day and make a difference tomorrow by supporting the initiative.
