Flashback Friday: Human League ‘Don’t You Want Me’
This Flashback Friday Spotlight take us to the 80s and the new wave group Human League and the # 1 smash hit 'Don't You Want Me.' The single was released towards the end of 81, but it was the summer of 82 before it peaked out at the top of the chart.
Around this time a brand new cable channel was launched which was dedicated to playing music videos around the clock. That channel, MTV. As popularity of this new music outlet grew, the music industry took note and quickly found a need to create elaborate videos.
The video for 'Don't You Want Me' goes big on their production. It's much more than showing the group perform in a concert or studio setting. Nah, we get a mini movie and that was the idea. Make it big!
The BIG 80s. As music video productions became that, productions. TV shows like 'Knight Rider' raised the bar on their idea of futuristic technology. Back in the day, a talking driverless sports car, what an outrageous concept! It made for a classic TV show for a guy who would go on star in another cult classic, 'Baywatch.' Yes, the one and only David Hasselhof. The futuristic Pontiac Firebirds had flashing lights across the front when the car 'Kitt' or 'Karr' would talk. Great stuff!
