The “Goodbye Tour” for HBO’s Girls was an unusual one, in that the final few episodes of the farewell season were notably devoid of major characters. The penultimate outing even introduced a major twist to one character’s absence, which executive producer Jenni Konner explains was intentional.

HBO’s Girls may be saying goodbye next Sunday, but don’t expect everyone to attend the farewell. Half the title Girls apparently won’t take part in the sixth season (and series) finale, as this past week’s “Goodbye Tour” lives up to the name.

Considering Netflix has pushed it to the point of debuting near of a new season or series every week, the premium providers of old seem almost deprived of new content. HBO won’t take that lying down, planning to up its original series haul by at least 50% of its current stable, but will it affect subscription fees?

There’s a Hollywood way of thinking when it comes to franchises and reboots: Give the audience more of the same, but…different. Stick to what fans love about the original property, while also giving them something a little new. The same concept could be translated to personal growth throughout our 20s: We remain the same, but ever-so-slightly change over time. That change comes at the speed of molasses as we resentfully trudge through maturity, much like the women of HBO’s Girls. Season 5 brings some change, sure, but it is mostly more of the same — not that that’s a bad thing.
