The incident involved Captain Kip Hart, the commander of TPD's CID, and another individual. Hart was ultimately arrested after probable cause was found to charge him with domestic violence strangulation. a Class B felony.

He was placed in the Tuscaloosa County Jail, where his bond has been set at $5,000, but he must remain there on a 24-hour hold under Alabama law before he is released from custody.

Because the alleged assault involves a TPD employee, the department is referring questions to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

Before his tenure in CID, Hart spent a term as the co-commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, which was known at the time as the Homicide Unit. While that unit investigates almost all assaults, murders, and out-of-hospital deaths in the county, CID is tasked with handling property crimes and misdemeanors that take place within Tuscaloosa City limits, such as burglaries and financial crimes. They also typically investigate domestic violence cases.

No further information was available on Sunday afternoon. Although Hart's mugshot was not available on the public county jail website, it was provided to the Thread by the sheriff's office.
