A predawn pileup on an interstate in Tuscaloosa has claimed the life of a 21-year-old who lived in the city, police said Sunday morning.

Stephanie Taylor, a spokesperson for the Tuscaloosa Police Department, said the original accident happened on the southbound lanes of I-359 and involved two vehicles.

A 21-year-old who was involved in the first crash at around 2 a.m. was reportedly standing outside of her vehicle when a second wreck occurred involving five more vehicles, for a total of seven vehicles in the pileup.

Taylor said the deceased victim and the other driver in the first crash were both struck by cars involved in the second series of collisions.

The woman died, and Taylor said five others were taken to DCH Regional Medical Center with injuries, though thankfully, police say none appear life-threatening.

The accident will be investigated by the Northport Police Department's Traffic Homicide Unit, which investigates all fatal crashes in its jurisdiction.

The deadly accident was one of at least three traffic fatalities in the region this weekend.
