Good morning West Alabama. It is Wednesday, January 8, 2024.It is the eighth day of the year with 357 days remaining.

Wednesday Morning Observations:

Temperatures have been near or just below freezing most of the week with even lower winds chills, yet some pet owners are leaving their fur babies out in the cold. Pet owners need to remember, the stress you feel from extreme cold outside, is also felt by your pet.

It was 27 degrees with a wind chill near 19 the other morning as I was driving to work and saw several beautiful cats huddled together shivering in a neighbor's yard. They were not strays.

Our most constant companions—dogs and cats—feel the effects of winter weather as much as we do, only they are often cast outside to weather the cold or a storm owing to a misconception that the fur on their backs will insulate them from suffering.

The American Veterinary Medical Association has the following information for pet owners during extreme cold snaps:

  • Bring your pets indoors during severe cold weather to avoid risks such as frostbite, disorientation, getting lost, or injury.
  • Cold weather may worsen some medical conditions in your pet just like it does you, especially those with arthritis.
  • If you do leave your pet outdoors, make sure they have shelter with bedding along with drinkable water. Water bowls can freeze quickly in extremely cold temperatures.
  • Never leave your pet alone in a car during winter, as the cold inside a car can be just as dangerous and lead to hypothermia.
  • You will probably need to shorten your dog's walks in very cold weather to protect you both from weather-associated health risks.

The main message is simple, if cold weather has a negative impact on you, it will on your pet too!
