VA Rolls Out Maintenance Upgrades at Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center

The Department of Veterans Affairs announced that it will realign an additional $800 million this fiscal year to the Veterans Health Administration’s Non-Recurring Maintenance program, which funds infrastructure upgrades at healthcare facilities to support safe and effective patient care.

The additional funds will be used for a range of enhancement projects at the VA health care facilities nationwide, including the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center.

“This is another step forward in our efforts to make VA work better for the Veterans, families, caregivers, and survivors we are charged with serving,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins. “Improved facilities, equipment, and infrastructure help improve care for Veterans, and these additional funds will enable VA to achieve that goal.”

The press release highlighted the planned upgrades for the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center.

• Correct failing sanitary sewer, water main, and fire protection deficiencies.
• Replace HVAC in various buildings (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning)
• Life Safety Systems (Sprinkler/Fire Alarm
• Replace HVAC in various buildings – (HVAC)
• Electronic Health Record Modernization (EHRM) – Infrastructure Upgrades
• EHRM Program Support Services – Utility System Upgrades

“The additional funds will come from savings gleaned from various VHA reform efforts,” said the press release. “The additions will bring total NRM program spending for fiscal year 2025 to $2.8 billion — a nearly $500 million increase from fiscal year 2024.”
