In this case, the evildoers use Google to obtain lots of information about the potential victim which makes it seem legitimate to some individuals.
The criminals use email to make contact with their targets. Those emails are full of personal information about the target. They then threaten the target claiming they will "expose" online activities that could allegedly harm them unless a ransom is paid.
Law enforcement advises anyone who receives an email like this that they should NOT respond.
They also advise potential victims to NOT click on any links or attachments in the email.
It's important to know that no legitimate Alabama law enforcement agency would contact you through email and threaten you for payment.
If you are targeted in a phishing or malware scam by anyone claiming to be with the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office, contact them immediately at 205-752-0616.
