True Things You Will Only Hear In An Alabama (or Southern) Kitchen
When house hunting I always spend the most time checking out the kitchen.
That is the place everyone will end up at: my house and probably your house as well.
It is definitely the NERVE CENTER of the home in Alabama and the South.
However, after spending time during the holidays with my family in Pennsylvania, I have concluded that certain things are only heard in kitchens way down SOUTH!
I was thinking about this topic when I stumbled upon a great article in Southern Living about a bunch of things you'll only hear in Southern kitchens.
Here's what the folks at Southern Living put on the list plus our thoughts on each one.
So, without further ado, let the countdown begin:
#11
"Don’t you dare throw out the bacon grease."
OK, this is a classic in Alabama. That stuff is gold! It adds flavor to anything. I like it in my sweet tea.
Just kidding. It will make any potato salad the best potato salad you've ever had.
#10
"Keep that margarine container, I'll use it for leftovers later!"
Open a kitchen cabinet in Alabama and try to count the margarine containers in there! You'll be counting for quite some time.
#9
"Mama would roll over if she knew you used the boxed stuff."
Southern Living is absolutely on point with this one. You never use "boxed" anything in a good Alabama kitchen and Mama will never forgive you if you do.
#8
"Honey, that's not near enough sugar in the tea."
*From YouTube/Mark Lowry
YES, YES, AND YES! In the video above, Mark is so right, the sweet tea should be able to double as pancake syrup! The American Diabetes Association did not approve this message.
#7
"It’s too hot to turn on the oven."
Exactly. Don't even try that.
#6
"Needs more butter..."
C'mon man, that is the truth. Butter just makes it better.
#5
"We're going to need to crack into my secret mayo stash."
I'm a little ashamed to admit this one right here. The secret stash of mayo, and it will always be Duke's.
#4
"Go ahead and fix yourself a plate."
We are just so polite in Alabama and want everyone to enjoy the food.
#3
"I’m full as a tick."
I have never heard this outside of Alabama or the South.
#2
"Mama never needed money to make a good meal."
I love this one. I have heard it a couple million times in my life in Alabama.
AND, FINALLY.
#1
"You’re cleaning the cast iron with dish soap?!"
WHAT DID YOU JUST DO?
This could get you in some life-threatening hot water in Alabama and the South.
All of that flavor is why it is so good! That is definitely #1 on this list.
