Sulligent Bank Robber Nabbed by Deputies – UPDATE
The First National Bank at 55220 Alabama Highway 17, just north of downtown Sulligent, was robbed just after 9:00 this morning. A short time later and not very far from the bank the suspect was arrested by law enforcement.
Lamar County Sheriff Marty Gottwald reports that no injuries resulted from the robbery but has revealed no further information about the incident other than to say a single suspect is in custody.
The suspect’s name, if they were armed, how much money they were able to get away with and specific charges against them have not been released at this time
This is the same bank that was robbed by an individual five years ago. The robber at time was not armed. The suspect in that case was apprehended in less than 24 hours.
UPDATE: Confusion reigned for some time after the Sulligent First National Band was robbed this morning. It was first announced that miscommunication between police and city hall had let to inaccurate information being released that a suspect had been captured.
Later in the day police confirmed a suspect, wearing a mask and gloves, and carrying a backpack, came into the bank and handed bank tellers a note.
A teller followed the directions on the note, and the suspect left the bank.
Responding officers found the man a short distance away from the bank and took him into custody.
The identity of the suspect and if he was armed have not been released by authorities.
This is an ongoing story and will be updated as more information is made available by authorities.
