Historic Northport Home Moved
Mattie Mae Hartin Rose died at the age of 102 on Feb. 21, 2013, at her Northport home. That longtime home near Northport Medical Center has now been moved to a site just off of Tierce Patton Road at Stonehedge, just north of Northport, so it can be preserved. The home on Hospital Drive was a gathering place for family members for more than a half century.
Transport of the 80,000-ton Rose home began after rush hour Monday morning and was completed several hours later according to Hollis Kennedy House Movers.
Rose, as she was affectionately known, was born and raised in Romulus as the oldest of six children. She was a 1929 graduate of Tuscaloosa County High School and a member of the first graduating class of nurses at the University of Alabama.

She then served as a nurse at Druid City Hospital, later to become DCH Regional Medical Center, for many years and continued it her profession into her 70s.
In her retirement Rose kept the home looking immaculate and spent a lot of time in her gardens surrounding the house.
DCH purchased the home several years ago and began to plan for its move to another location. While the Northport Hospital has no current plans for the property on which the house sat, the removal clears the way for future hospital expansion north of the main facility.
Members of the family say they are grateful that the home could be moved and preserved for years to come.
