Alabama University Breaks Ground in Fast-Growing Industry
A well known university in the state of Alabama is leading the way in a fast growing industry. Using a special material, this school has made history and its creation is set to benefit bus drivers.
Alabama A&M University hosted a two-day workshop with architects, contractors, students and more with world-renowned hemp builder Sergiy Kovalenkov. During the workshop, attendees explored the world of hemp-based construction materials.

As a result of the workshop, Alabama A&M will make history by becoming the first university in the state to build a structure made of hemp, according to a press release by Alabama A&M University.
The university says that the hemp structure will serve as a center for electric vehicle bus drivers.
Kovalenkov's company Hempire UA gained international recognition for developing “Hempire Mix,” a carbon-negative hempcrete insulation that combines industrial hemp, water, and a natural lime-based binder. The material, known for its energy efficiency, durability, and environmental benefits, has been used in projects across Europe, Asia, and North America.
“In our quest to reach a 100% Zero Emissions Transit System coupled with the University Green Initiative and carbon footprint reduction, this building will fulfill both objectives,” said Bulldog Transit System (BTS) Director Marshall Chimwedzi in the press release. “Design plans are underway, and we plan to begin construction in January with an expected completion date of December 2026.”
“This new lounge is a big win for our team,” added BTS Operations Supervisor Lei Hollingsworth-Jackson. It’ll give our 20 drivers a larger space to relax, prepare, and coordinate before and after their routes.”
Hemp-lime is the material that will be used for the building. According to the press release, it's also known as hempcrete.
This is a natural insulation material that automatically regulates humidity, improves indoor air quality, and is resistant to fire, pests, and mold. “It replaces conventional insulation and drywall with a single material that is healthier for people and more sustainable for the planet,” he said in the press release. “For bus drivers working with electric vehicles, this lounge will even provide protection from electromagnetic fields, creating a healthier space for rest and recovery.”
