Alabama retaining redshirt junior quarterback Austin Mack and sophomore quarterback Keelon Russell officially kicks off the Crimson Tide's quarterback battle after redshirt junior Ty Simpson declared for the 2026 NFL draft after one season as Alabama's starter.

Mack, a 6-foot-6, 235-pound quarterback from Folson, California, was originally committed to head coach Kalen DeBoer when DeBoer was at Washington. He redshirted during his one season in Seattle and transferred to Alabama to follow coach DeBoer when he was hired as the Crimson Tide's head coach. Mack spent one season as the Tide's third string behind Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson in 2024 and served as Alabama's backup quarterback behind Ty Simpson in 2025.

During his two seasons in Tuscaloosa, Mack has completed 74.3% of his passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns, mainly playing during reserve minutes for the Crimson Tide. He entered Alabama's 38-3 loss to the Indiana Hoosiers in the Rose Bowl after Simpson cracked a rib during the second quarter, where he completed 11-16 passes for 103 yards in the season-ending loss.

Russell, a 6-foot-3, 194-pound quarterback from Duncanville, Texas, signed with the Crimson Tide as a five-star signee after originally being committed to SMU. He flipped to the Crimson Tide during the summer of 2024. He appeared in two games with the Crimson Tide in 2025, completing 11-15 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns. As a five-star quarterback at Duncanville High School, he passed for 4,177 yards and 55 touchdowns as a senior.

The two quarterbacks will compete for the starting quarterback position at Alabama in 2026.
